Children's Programs at the Porter County Public Library
The Porter County Public Library System offers many programs for the children of the Porter County community. They have two popular ongoing programs, Mother Goose on the Loose, and Story Time. Mother Goose on the Loose is for babies under the age of 2. They enjoy simple stories, music, and easy to play games that excite all their senses. Parents are encouraged to interact with their babies during this free, fun and educational program, check the branches to see days and times when this wonderful program is offered. Story Times are geared toward preschoolers. They sing, dance, listen to stories, do crafts, have a snacks, and enjoy various themed parties throughout the year. Story Time is created to get the children use to a classroom environment and encourage their love for books and learning. This program is offered on different days depending on the branch and parents are encouraged to allow their children to be in the room by themselves, exceptions are made for children with disabilities and for those that my be more comfortable if a parent remains with them. In the summer the Porter County Public Library System is the place to be! The library offers the Summer Reading Program, kids of all ages are encouraged to participate. They can win prizes for reading books, the more the better, and sign up for a number of fun and educational activities and parties that are offered to promote literacy all summer long. The library usually offers holiday themed parties or programs and they try to do a program during various school breaks in order to encourage reading and learning activities. A monthly movie night is offered for all ages, which offers a free kid friendly movie, free snacks and drinks. The library also offers small treats to children who check out books at various times of the year in an effort to encourage reading. The Porter County Libraries opens their doors to the local schools and offers a free story telling program and a tour of the library. Teenagers are welcome to volunteer in various departments throughout the library. Many honor students who need to meet volunteer requirements take advantage of this great learning opportunity to learn the business of a public library. Our young volunteers are welcome to help with programs, shelf books and materials, data entry projects, help set up a display, help maintain the audio/visual departments, and various other tasks. All of the children's programs are created to encourage reading and teach children a love for learning and the library that will stay with them throughout their lives.
